Thirty Years of Misery
Fight for Faith, Power, and Empire During Europe's Most Devastating Conflict
Between 1618 and 1648, Europe was consumed by one of the longest and most destructive conflicts in its history. What began as a rebellion in Bohemia soon engulfed the Holy Roman Empire and drew nearly every major European power into a struggle over religion, dynastic ambition, and political supremacy. Millions perished as armies marched across Central Europe, cities were besieged, alliances shifted, and entire regions were devastated.
Thirty Years of Misery places you in command of the major powers that shaped this conflict. Lead the Imperial Habsburgs, the Catholic League, Sweden, or France as you fight to reshape Germany through military campaigns, religious influence, political maneuvering, and strategic diplomacy.
Victory requires more than battlefield success. You must secure electorates, protect your heartlands, influence the religious landscape of the Empire, and achieve your faction's unique historical ambitions before peace is finally negotiated at Westphalia.
A Grand Strategy Game Unlike Any Other
Rather than recreating individual battles, Thirty Years of Misery captures the entire strategic conflict across three decades of war.
Every campaign combines:
- Military operations
- Religious conflict
- Political objectives
- Coalition warfare
- Historical events
- Dynamic diplomacy
Each round features a randomized turn order, ensuring that no two campaigns unfold the same way. Players must continually adapt to changing circumstances, unexpected interventions, and opportunities created by both allies and enemies.
Four Distinct Factions For 2-4 Players
Each player commands one of the major powers involved in the war.

Imperial Habsburgs
Preserve Imperial authority, defend Austria, secure Bohemia, and strengthen Habsburg influence throughout the Empire.
Catholic League
Champion the Catholic cause while advancing Bavaria's political ambitions and expanding League influence.
Sweden
Enter Germany as the champion of Protestantism, dominate the Baltic region, and challenge Habsburg power through aggressive maneuver warfare.
France
Support the Protestant cause—not for religious reasons, but to weaken the Habsburgs and establish France as Europe's dominant continental power.
Each faction possesses its own deck of event cards, reinforcements, objectives, and strategic priorities, making every role feel completely different.
Military Campaigns Meet Religious Conflict
One of the game's most innovative mechanics is the separation of military control from religious influence.
Occupying a principality does not automatically determine its religion. During dedicated Religious War Phases, both sides attempt to convert or uproot religious influence across the Empire using unique conversion dice representing the differing goals of Catholics and Protestants. This creates a fascinating strategic tension: military conquest alone is not enough—you must also shape the religious future of Germany.
Custom Dice for Every Army
Every faction fights differently.
The game includes unique battle dice for:
- Imperial armies
- Catholic League
- Spain
- Sweden
- France
- German Protestants
- Saxony
- Fortress defenses
Each die features its own distribution of combat results, reflecting the historical strengths and weaknesses of the participating armies.
Command Historical Leaders
Legendary commanders provide powerful abilities that can change the course of a campaign.
Lead armies with:
- Albrecht von Wallenstein
- Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly
- Gustavus Adolphus
- Lennart Torstensson
- Henri de Turenne
Each leader introduces unique operational advantages, from improved movement and reinforcements to enhanced battlefield performance.
Dynamic Historical Events
Every faction possesses its own deck of event cards inspired by real historical developments.
Cards can be used either as:
- Military movement
- Powerful historical events
Major developments—including foreign interventions, shifting alliances, military reforms, and the gradual entrance of Sweden and France into the war—ensure that every campaign tells a different story while remaining grounded in historical reality.
Multiple Ways to Win
Victory is determined through several interconnected systems.
Players compete to:
- Control Electorates
- Secure Heartlands
- Spread their religion
- Achieve faction-specific objectives
- Trigger sudden victory
- Shape the final Treaty of Westphalia settlement
Even allied factions compete for individual prestige, creating fascinating strategic decisions between cooperation and self-interest.

Historical Background
The Thirty Years' War began in 1618 after the Bohemian Revolt challenged Habsburg rule and quickly escalated into a continent-wide conflict. Catholic and Protestant states, together with powerful dynasties including the Habsburgs and Bourbons, pursued competing religious, political, and territorial ambitions.
Over three decades, armies marched repeatedly across Germany, causing immense destruction while foreign powers such as Sweden, France, Spain, and Denmark intervened at different stages. The war finally ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, fundamentally reshaping the political order of Europe and establishing principles that continue to influence international relations today.
